Benefits of Nature for Mental Well being

Benefits of Nature on Mental Health

I love being out in nature and find it a constant source of inspiration, relaxation which helps to recharge the batteries. The benefits of nature on mental health have been proven time and time again to help reduce anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement and even anger.

If you go out for a walk look up and see the sky through the canopy of trees, it is a beautiful different perspective on nature and the beauty of where we live.

Being outside in nature can make people feel closer to those they have lost and can bring solace in the space and beauty of being outside. Nature can boost your psychological wellbeing and it can help you feel happier and more content as a person which is of benefit in so many areas of life.

NHS Forest Project

According to the NHS Forest Project,

  1. Nature helps improve our overall mood and reduces stress and anxiety levels
  2. It also provides long-term benefits, including reducing the risk of developing chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
  3. Nature is restorative. Seeing and hearing it makes us feel at home. It makes us feel connected and happier.
  4. During this lockdown we can enjoy the many benefits the natural environment has to offer; in addition to going on green daily walks or runs, we can also spend time in our own gardens (if we are lucky enough to have one), we can look out of windows, we can take care of house plants and we can use online resources to connect with nature.

All of these forms of engagement can benefit us and our overall wellbeing.

If you can, go out for a walk and look around and you may find the many wonders of the world we live in. Getting away from your routine and being with nature can feel liberating and rejuvenating.
