Monthly Goal Achievement Journal
I saw a post about writing a monthly goal achievement journal on one of the social media channels and my response was curious and prompted this blog!
“End of Month – Review and Reflect ….. Do you review the end of the month before planning the next? I think it’s very important or you may find yourself setting the same goals every single month and not hitting them.”
What if
“What a good idea” I thought but at the same time I could feel the anxiety starting to build in my chest and my brain started whirring around with a chaotic collection of ‘what ifs’. The anxiety and ‘what ifs’ mixed together produced a heady cocktail of fear and I could feel my head racing ahead putting up barriers and awakening my internal managers!
- What if I don’t achieve the goals I set out at the beginning of the month?
- What if I set unachievable goals, which will set myself up for failure and at the end of the month, validate my ‘not good enough’ part of me!?
- What if I set goals and achieve them at the expense of other tasks, which may crop up during the month and are put to one side leaving possible opportunities missed and I fail?
- What if I don’t know what I want to achieve this month, how will I feel with without any goals to achieve?
Self Reflection
The ‘what ifs’ kept coming and all of them seemed to have a conclusion that I am either going to fail or will feel ‘not good enough’. This mental process happened in a moment in my head like a movie on fast-forward! My head stopped the torrent of ‘what ifs’ and I took a breath, took stock of what had just happened and being aware of my response to the post gave me pause for self reflection.
Take control of anxiety
I believe life is for living in the here and now, the best way we can and setting yourself up for failure is not the best way. I also understand after many hours of counselling, ‘who I am’ and ‘what I want’ and as a counsellor I endeavour to help others discover their inner selves making them stronger and more self-aware. If your anxiety takes over and it controls you, counselling can help you find ways for you to control your anxiety.
